The power of imagination: new approach to Charles Peirce`s abduction
Abduction is one of the most popular Peircean ideas, it is a foundation of his pragmatism and starting point of every inquiry. For centuries abduction has been understood and analyzed only as subordinated to logical reasoning. But passages in a few of Peirce`s essays suggest another, unexpected element in abductive reasoning: the imagination. The role of imagination in the process of abduction has been underestimated in philosophy before the development of the American pragmatism. In both William James and John Dewy, we can find significant sparkles on that topic. But the holistic philosophical system of Peirce is the place where the idea has blossomed. Imagination defined as spontaneous conjunctional (even divine) power of creation will present a new trajectory in abduction and evolutionary cosmology. The paper will present the imagination in the light of a specific kind of relation in both thinking and universe (seen by Peirce as a developing mind).
