THE MATTER OF SUBJECTIVITY IN THE RECEPTION OF SOVIET RUSSIAN SEMIOTICS IN CONTEMPORARY CHINA
Since the 1980s, as more restrictions were lifted from China’s academia, the cultural semiotics from Soviet Russia has exerted increasingly substantial influence in the Chinese domains of literature, linguistics, philosophy, and semiotics. In today’s Chinese community of the humanities and social sciences, the theories of Bakhtin, Lotman, and Uspenskij, among others, have been increasingly popular. It is notable that Bakhtin’s theories have gained special prominence. However, despite the many arduous attempts of Chinese translations and research to describe Soviet Russian semiotics as it is, purely objective theoretical interpretation and reception are simply impossible. As a matter of fact, in all receptions lie the issue of “subjectivity” of the recipient nation and a consequent process of “localization”. The reception of Soviet Russian semiotics has inevitably involved a process of “sinicization”, which has been under the influence of social ideology and constricted by underlying religions, cultures and mentalities. The present paper explores the matter of subjectivity with “Chinese characteristics” in the reception of Soviet Russian semiotics in contemporary China. These Chinese characteristics are mainly manifest in the “holism” of mentalities. It is precisely this subjectivity that has created profound impacts on the processes of “selection”, “interpretation” and “application” in the Chinese reception of Soviet Russian semiotics and has even led to a certain degree of receptive transformation.
