Abstract
The world's greatest religions recognize a pilgrimage as an extremely important, profound expression of faith and religious practice necessary to achieve excellence and fulfilment. On the other hand, the structure of any cultural and religious activity is based on signs and meanings which are crucial for collective identity and memory that foster the need of consumption of the spiritual products.
The general aim of this paper is to shed light on semiotic processes which take place in the interdisciplinary space between the religious practice connected to spiritual travelling and business. The author of the paper will also present and discuss some definitions and features of religious tourism taking place within different great religions of the world regarding to the reciprocity of spiritual and material advantage.
There will be also discussed the question to what extent the religious tourism and pilgrimage can make a significant contribution to the local and national economy and gross domestic product.
Also the paradoxical fact that even as the world is becoming more secular, the industry of religious tourism is growing faster and is an important economic source to many countries and regions, will be emphasized.
